Autumn (Southern) Rally
18 Aug 2012
West Berkshire
Starts and finishes at the Crofton Pumping Station (GR 174/261623) on the Kennet and Avon Canal between Hungerford and Marlborough (see www.croftonbeamengines.org).
This historic site is home to the oldest working steam engines in the world still in their original house and capable of doing the job for which they were installed – lifting water to the highest point of the Kennet and Avon canal. A team of dedicated volunteers maintain the whole of this Grade 1 Listed site now, and although not a steaming weekend, we hope that short tours of the engine house will be possible.
Clerk of the Course, Richard Scott, promises a scenic 95 mile route taking in the some of the best ‘yellow’ roads in West Berkshire as well as a few in Hampshire and Wiltshire.Your route will plumb the depths of the Kennet Valley and scale the heights of the Berkshire Downs, with a lunch stop near Newbury, why not come and blow away the post Olympic blues…………….
The usual mix of traditional route-finding techniques will be employed to ensure navigators are kept on their toes but presented in a straight forward manner – no circular herringbones!
