The Measham Rally
18 Jan 2014 - 19 Jan 2014
Nr Darlington, Co Durham
The Measham is a seminal VSCC event, an event for the true vintage sports motoring enthusiast. It was first run in 1950, and is one of the most important events in the VSCC calendar. Always organised by enthusiasts for enthusiasts, a finish, let alone an award, on any Measham is a major accomplishment of which any motor sports competitor can be proud.
For our Anniversary event Bob Chapman will be Clerk of the Course with John Gill as his Deputy. Bob and John ran three very memorable Meashams in the early 2000s and Bob has offered to re-create one of those classic events in North Yorkshire for our Anniversary year. They will be supported by a team of very experienced Rally enthusiasts.
The start will be at the newly re-vamped Scotch Corner Hotel, which has a long association with motor sport as a start and a finish venue, a control on the early round Britain RACs and a feature on the Monte when en route from Glasgow. A special rate has been negotiated for the Measham just quote “Bob Chapman” or “Measham” when booking.
The event will cover 180 miles in North Yorkshire, all of which will be tarmac, with the exception of in excess of 20 miles on Ministry Of Defence training grounds near Catterick. We have negotiated for this land, which is not normally freely available. We have been given a very good rate by the MOD. However, the use of the Ranges does mean that the entry fee will need to be increased to cover this cost. We believe the increase in entry fee will be far outweighed by the sheer pleasure and experience of this Anniversary Measham.
The MOD roads are all graded and predominantly smooth, with very few other areas. The entire section will be arrowed to an international standard to ensure all cars remain on the correct route and will include the original Catterick Hill Climb course as used by Darlington Motor Club in the 1950s and 60s.
The instructions for the event will be strictly by map reference, with the emphasis being on correct time-keeping. The instructions will not be difficult and the Champagne Class really easy.
We will require more than the normal complement of marshals to allow us to take maximum benefit from the event. So please come along, as competitors or marshals for what will be a very memorable event in our 80th Anniversary year.
