What Makes a Car Eligible for VSCC Events?
Tuesday 01 September 2026
Thinking of entering a VSCC event? Eligibility is about much more than a car's age. Here's an introduction to how the Club classifies vehicles, issues Buff Forms and helps ensure fair and enjoyable competition.
One of the questions the Vintage Sports-Car Club is asked most often is simple:
"Is my car eligible for VSCC events?"
The answer depends on the car, the event and how the vehicle fits within the Club's eligibility framework.
The VSCC exists to encourage the active use of vintage and historic cars. To make competition fair and enjoyable, vehicles are classified according to established eligibility rules and are issued with VSCC Eligibility Documents, commonly known as Buff Forms.
The purpose of the system is not to exclude enthusiasts. In fact, the Eligibility Sub-Committee has long operated with an explicit commitment to help owners navigate the process wherever possible, while ensuring that cars compete in appropriate classes.
Eligibility considers factors including:
- Vehicle specification
- Age and period authenticity
- Mechanical configuration
- Historic classification
- Event type
The Club's volunteer Eligibility specialists undertake research, consult marque experts, inspect vehicles where necessary and maintain detailed records to support consistent decision making.
For many events, a valid Buff Form is required before an entry can be accepted. The document confirms how the car has been classified and helps ensure that competitors are competing against similar machinery.
The eligibility process also helps preserve the character of VSCC competition. It protects the sporting integrity of events while recognising the diversity of historic vehicles that continue to survive and compete today.
If you are unsure whether your vehicle may qualify, the best approach is simply to ask. The Club's Eligibility team is there to help prospective competitors understand the options available and guide them through the process.
